Mitigating Model Minority Myth through Social Action

March 5, 2010

Just picked this up off of Race-talk.org (An awesome project by our very own Kirwin Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity here at Ohio State!):

“Also about us: South Asians and civil rights”

We can see here the fundamentally asinine nature of the model minority myth being dissolved by powerful, thoughtful community action. I am deeply impressed to see the confrontation of social injustice used not only to right the inequalities wrought against the South Asian American community but also to tear down the class walls and expose the stark reality of a diverse people living among us. Not only can the South Asian American community mature and become more aware of their intrinsic involvement and investment in civil rights issues, but I believe the greater populace can only benefit from a more whole image of the South Asian community.
